PRACTICAL GUIDE

I employ a domestic worker. What insurance should I check?

Even a few hours a week deserve attention. Start by clarifying who employs the person and how the work is arranged.

  1. If you employ someone for domestic work, check workers’ compensation insurance. Working only a few hours does not, in itself, remove that obligation.
  2. Gather the tasks, work locations, hours and pay. These details help arrange the protection correctly.
  3. If you hire a cleaning company or an independent provider, check who is responsible for the insurance and request evidence of it.
  4. Keep the policy and claims contact. Report relevant changes to duties, pay or the people covered.

Home insurance and workers’ compensation serve different purposes. Do not assume one replaces the other.

Prepare: tasks, hours, pay and details of the person providing the service.
