A short introduction to your protection options.

In this video, I explain why life cover can matter while you work in Portugal, and the difference between Essential and Reinforced. Watch it whenever it suits you, then explore the details below.

WORKING LIVES IN PORTUGAL

Different jobs. The same need for a reliable plan.

YOUR WORK. YOUR FUTURE.

What if you could no longer work?

You might drive a tuk-tuk or TVDE car, deliver orders, work in a restaurant or grocery shop, or run a mobile-phone and computer shop. Your earnings pay for today and help you plan for tomorrow — perhaps for family in Portugal or in your home country.

If an accident left you permanently unable to work, how long would your savings last? If a serious illness required care or a return home, what choices would you have? It is easier to think about protection before you need it.

Your work and responsibilities are personal. I will look at your situation and existing cover before suggesting anything.

Protection for the person who earns the income.

This is not simply another policy. A covered permanent disability or defined serious illness can provide capital to you. That money could help you adapt your home, arrange support or make decisions about your future, whether you stay in Portugal or return home. The Reinforced option also adds protection if permanent work disability follows an accident.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Two ways to protect your future.

Both examples start with 200,000 € of life cover and can advance capital to you for defined permanent disability or serious illness. For someone around 30, the indicative first-year prices are about 40 € or 75 € per month. Your occupation, health and chosen cover determine your personal quotation.

OPTION 1

Essential

Core protection at a lower monthly cost, with a strict disability definition.

about 40 €/ month
first policy year
Life and accident cover
200,000 € for death, plus 200,000 € for death by accident and 200,000 € for death in a traffic accident when the relevant conditions apply.
Absolute and permanent disability (IAD)
200,000 € if you can no longer do any paid work, have at least 85% assessed disability and need permanent help with basic daily activities.
Critical Illness Base
Up to 200,000 € advanced to you for one of six specifically defined events: five named cancers or a heart attack. It does not cover every type of cancer.
Support services
Second medical opinion, family assistance and access to the wellbeing network, under their respective terms.

IAD does not pay simply because you cannot continue your current job. This option has no extra disability-by-accident capitals.

OPTION 2

Reinforced

Broader disability and serious-illness protection, with extra accident cover.

about 75 €/ month
first policy year
Life and accident cover
200,000 € for death, plus 200,000 € for death by accident and 200,000 € for death in a traffic accident when the relevant conditions apply.
Permanent work disability (IDPAC 65%)
200,000 € if you can no longer do your profession or compatible paid work and have at least 65% assessed permanent disability. The percentage alone is not enough.
Disability after a traffic accident
Up to 600,000 € — 200,000 € IDPAC + 200,000 € accident disability + 200,000 € traffic-accident disability, if all three conditions are met.
Critical Illness 27
Up to 200,000 € advanced to you for one of 27 defined serious illnesses, with a broader range than Essential.
Support services
Second medical opinion, family assistance and access to the wellbeing network, under their respective terms.

These are examples, not fixed packages. I chose 200,000 € as a substantial level of protection for a serious event. We can consider lower or higher amounts, as well as other available cover combinations, to match your needs and budget. Your personal quotation will show the cover and monthly cost before you decide.

THE DIFFERENCE AT A GLANCE

The right protection depends on what you need it to do.

Both examples start with the same life capital. The main differences are the disability test, accident-related disability cover and range of serious illnesses.

01 · ESSENTIALIAD · 85%

For the most severe permanent disability: unable to do any paid work and needing permanent help with basic daily activities.

02 · REINFORCEDIDPAC · 65%

For permanent inability to do your profession or compatible paid work, with at least 65% assessed disability.

03 · SERIOUS ILLNESS6 or 27

Essential covers six specifically defined events. Reinforced covers 27, including a wider range of serious illnesses.

04 · IN BOTH OPTIONSPersonal support

Second medical opinion, family assistance and access to the wellbeing network are included in both examples.

Important: The disability and serious-illness amounts are advances of the 200,000 € main life capital, not separate amounts to add together for the same event. The extra accident-related disability capitals apply only to Reinforced when their conditions are met. Neither option pays monthly income during a temporary period off work.

DEFINED CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER

Which serious illnesses are included?

Essential covers six specifically defined events: invasive breast, uterine, colorectal, lung and prostate cancers, and heart attack. Reinforced covers 27 defined conditions, including cancer, stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, multiple sclerosis and other serious illnesses. The exact medical definitions matter: not every diagnosis qualifies.

For either option, an eligible serious illness can advance up to 200,000 € to you, subject to a 90-day waiting period, medical definitions and exclusions. This is part of the main life capital, not a second 200,000 € payment. I will explain the relevant list and the policy wording before you decide.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Clear terms, before any decision.

These figures are a guide, not a personal offer or a contract.

One year, renewable

The policy runs for one year and normally renews each year. The monthly price is set for each policy year and is reviewed at renewal as your age and cover change.

How to stop

You can cancel the bank direct debit at any time. That stops automatic payments, but it does not formally cancel the insurance. Also send me or the insurer a short written request. To prevent renewal, the policy asks for at least 30 days’ notice; stopping payment alone may leave an amount due and put cover at risk.

Money when you need it

An eligible permanent disability or defined serious illness can bring forward a one-off amount to you. It is not a monthly income or an extra payment added to the main life capital.

Where cover applies

This page is for people working in Portugal, but the main policy covers insured events worldwide unless the individual policy says otherwise. This is not travel or repatriation insurance.

Your own price

The rounded prices above are only an indication. Your age, work, health, chosen cover and the insurer’s assessment determine your personal monthly price.

Not temporary income cover

Neither option pays a monthly income for a few weeks off work. The insurer assesses each claim against the policy definitions. If temporary income is your main concern, ask me about other protection.

Read the insurer’s full policy conditions and product information (both in Portuguese). Your individual quotation, pre-contractual documents and policy terms take precedence over this summary.
