PRACTICAL GUIDE

I have become self-employed. Where do I start?

Describe the work you actually do, including travel and occasional tasks. Your protection should reflect your real activity.

  1. Check workers’ compensation: it is generally mandatory for self-employed workers, even when they also have an employed job.
  2. List all activities, work locations and relevant earnings to establish the insured remuneration.
  3. Consider damage you might cause to clients or others. Check whether your profession requires liability insurance and what protection fits.
  4. List essential equipment and expenses that would continue if you could not work. Review those needs separately.

Personal accident insurance does not automatically replace mandatory workers’ compensation.

Prepare: activity, duties, earnings, travel and client contracts.
